The Timisoara Tumbler
The Timisoara Tumbler was created in Timisoara, a city in southwestern Romania around the end of the 19th century. Their exact origin will remain uncertain, it is believed however that they are of Turkish origin.
When the breed was created, little emphasis was laid on the looks of the bird, a good tumbling ability was much more important. Apart from selfs there were also magpie-marked birds. It was from these birds with the help of outcrosses to the Komorn Tumbler that a breed with a unique marking was brought about: the Timisoara Tumbler.
Though in breeding great importance is laid on body, head, crest and eyes, it’s the marking that results appealing to many people and has turned into the trademark of this Romanian breed. The marking can be described in the following way: the first third of the body is white, the middle third is splashed with colour (either lighter or darker) and the latter third is totally coloured. An exact definition of the pattern is not to be given, due to the nature of the marking this is impossible, also the standard allows for certain variability of the marking.
The following colour classes are allowed for the Timisoara Tumbler: black, dun, blue, red, yellow and copper. The best colours at the moment are black and dun, reds and yellows are a bit more difficult in breeding, the toughest challenge are the blues and the coppers.
Timisoara Tumblers are very lively and resistant birds that have no problem in raising their young. Due to this high fertility the breeder can select the offspring strictly towards the standard.
The breed is being catered for in the German Club for Timisoara Tumblers. You can contact the club via its president: Werner Hartmann
